Birthstones
Birthstones are any of various gems associated with the particular
calendar months of the year and considered lucky to people who are
born in those months.
Some scholars attribute the origin of the tradition of birthstones
to the Breastplate of Aaron (the brother of Moses), a religious
caftan arranged with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve
tribes of Israel.

The Breastplate of the High Priest (Exodus 28, 15-30)
And thou shall make the breastplate of judgment with cunning work;
after the work of the ephods thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue,
and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen shalt thou make
it.
Foursquare it shall be doubled; a span shall be the length thereof,
and a span shall be the breadth thereof.
And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of
stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle:
this shall be the first row.
And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.
And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst. And the fourth
row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper; they shall be set in gold
in their enclosings.
And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel,
twelve, according to their names, like the engravings on a signet;
every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes
And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of
Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth
in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually.
Myths and superstitions gradually grew up regarding the stones,
and symbolic meanings or virtues were ascribed to them. Different
nations around the world have developed different charts for birthstones.
Today, five months of the year have alternate birthstones.

Birthstones are thought to have first become popular in the 15th
or 16th century. It is also thought because the powers of a birthstone
are heightened during it's corresponding month, that they were originally
worn by everyone each month. If this is truly the case then you
would have to have a set of 12 different birthstones and rotate
them monthly .

Anniversaries
Although gifts have
traditionally been given for wedding anniversaries since medieval
times, Emily Post was the first to publish a list of suggested anniversary
gifts.
Her first etiquette
guide, published in 1922, contained suggestions for the first, fifth,
tenth, fifteenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth years of
marriage. When her book was reprinted in 1957, that list was expanded
to include suggestions for each of the first 15 years and for every
five years after that.
Over the years, even
this list was broadened by others to include gifts for every year
from the first to the twenty-fifth, plus every five years through
the 75th wedding anniversary.
The Traditional Anniversary
Gift List is based on Emily Post's original suggestions from her
books, "Etiquette", while the modern Anniversary Gift
list is no doubt based on the expanded lost from the edition reprinted
in 1957 that includes additions from various sources
Another list, found
on many florists web sites, offer flower suggestions as anniversary
gifts. The researcher for this information was unable to find and
acknowledged source for the flowers.

However, the following
Anniversary Stone Gift List has been endorsed by the Jewelers of
America, the American Gem Society, the American Gem Trade Association,
and the Gemological Institute of America.
The following list
differs from the Traditional and Modern list in that it only includes
gemstones and precious metals. The alternates list was compiled
from various books and internet sources. These alternate stones
appear to have little acceptance as suggested gifts but are listed
here for completeness.
